In the movie “School of Rock,” Jack Black played Dewey Finn, who teaches a rock music class at a private school. Jim Miller does the same.

With his company Jim Miller Guitar, Miller teaches guitar, vocals, bass and drums to children during the week. By the weekend, he and his five-piece band play tunes inspired by bands like Grateful Dead, Phish and The Allman Brothers Band.

The JiMiller Band will perform at The Village Idiot for the first time in 10 years on April 27.

The band also includes Dave Blackerby, Steve “Nev” Scheff, Brian “Bagel” Golenberg and Miller’s son Mike.

Miller has been playing music for most of his life and has shared the stage with Sheryl Crow and The Allman Brothers. The JiMiller Band was formed 16 years ago and has opened for Bruce Hornsby and Rusted Root.

Miller also does solo acoustic sets. At the local show, Miller will do a set by himself before the rest of the band joins him onstage.

“I am actually opening my own show,” Miller said.

Miller said he prefers playing with the band, but enjoys his solo shows as well.

“What I get to do when I do the acoustic [shows] is different music,” Miller said. “I do some of my originals that really I don’t think I can do with the band.”

Miller said he used to play the area a lot, but because of booking conflicts, they haven’t in a while. The upcoming show will be the second time The JiMiller Band will play at The Village Idiot. He said he loves the club.

“It’s our kind of club,” Miller said. “It’s not pretentious; it’s a real music club.”

Miller said the band doesn’t have a setlist for the show.

“Sometimes we play right off the cuff,” he said.

Miller said he is excited to see old fans in the area again.
